Good day for van Gisbergen

-

Motorsport: Championship leader Shane van Gisbergen produced a flawless display to win both Supercars races at Sandown Raceway yesterday.

After roaring home to victory in race 25, van Gisbergen made it win No 16 for the season with an exciting drive to topple Saturday’s winner Will Davison.

The pair had an even start off the front row with Davison prevailing through the opening corner but van Gisbergen was hot on his heels and maintained a 0.5sec gap.

The top six drivers could only be separated by less than 1.5sec through seven laps before thirdplaced Chaz Mostert pitted first to undercut his rivals.

On lap 18, van Gisbergen followed suit and his team delivered a crisp 3.6sec tyre change as he hit the track marginally ahead of Mostert. — AAP

Britain’s Anthony Joshua on a split points decision to retain his WBA, WBO, IBF and IBO belts in Jeddah.

The contest in Saudi Arabia was a rematch of a fight in London in September, which the Ukrainian won on a unanimous decision to take Joshua’s belts, but with more intensity and emotion.

Usyk (35) appeared comfortably ahead as the final bell rang but the American judge surprisingly awarded the fight 115113 to Joshua.

The British and Ukrainian judges decided 115113 and 116112 to Usyk.

The victory took Usyk’s record to 20 fights undefeated while Joshua (32) suffered a third defeat in what could prove a watershed in his career. — Reuters

Africa’s bowlers ruled supreme, restricting England to 165 in its first innings and then dismissing it for 149 on Saturday.

Stokes, however, said there would be no change when the second test starts at Old Trafford next Thursday.

‘‘This is absolutely not a wakeup call or anything like that. It was just unfortunate we’re unable to execute in the way that we want to play this week,’’ Stokes said.

McCullum echoed the captain, rejecting the suggestion that the England batsmen might have been too cavalier against a strong bowling lineup. — Reuters
