A FURTHER fragment of the Catlins’ natural coastal heritage is now protected, thanks to the cooperation of landowners and local conservationists.

The Papatowai Forest Heritage Trust has been acquiring and placing under covenant sections of unspoilt and regenerating bush since 1996 and, in May, bought a 1.56ha block bordering the Tahakopa Estuary in the remote coastal hamlet.

The trust is conducting a private opening of the new Findlater Reserve tomorrow, and is also inviting the public to attend an art exhibition, and walk the reserve, from 3pm.

Trustee and project leader Mary Sutherland said the event was a celebration of the reserve’s ‘‘preservation in perpetuity’’.

‘‘Both the Findlater family and the trust wanted this land to be protected and enhanced.

‘‘The purchase was made at the end of May, and we’ve now submitted an application to covenant the land, which will be known as Findlater Reserve.

‘‘It’s regenerating native forest, and provides a buffer for the forested edge to the estuary and opportunities for native species, especially forest trees, to return.’’

Mrs Sutherland said she believed many people would be surprised the land was not already protected.

‘‘Despite feeling safe, as it hasn’t really been touched for 60odd years, it was vulnerable, so we’re absolutely thrilled to be working with the Findlater family to make this a special place accessible to all.’’

The reserve could be accessed through the rear of the Papatowai Campground, and had a ‘‘basic’’ 300m trail running through it at present, which would be developed as funding allowed.

Mrs Sutherland said the trust hoped others would share its vision, and be moved to contribute.
