Don’t judge Italians for their choice of prime minister

-

I CAN’T understand why anybody would vote for Giorgia Meloni, given the record inflation in Italy — food, gas, and the cost of living being at record highs.

I’m sure the millions of illegal refugees crossing into Italy played no part in her election either.

The people of Italy wouldn’t be upset with the increase in taxes to pay for all of this so that probably wasn’t a factor.

And I’m sure the dramatic rise in crime couldn’t possibly have been a factor in her extraordinary win.

So why did she win? Maybe the Italian people looked at the country and figured out the system is broken. Nobody is doing anything to make things better.

Maybe the Italian people looked at the other politicians as a bunch of pathetic losers that wouldn’t represent them?

Why vote for the status quo when the prospects of things getting better under dysfunctional leadership is zero? Why elect more really bad people to office?

How bad do things have to get before people decide they need a change? I guess we just found out.

I guess my question would be: How could you justify not voting for her if you lived in Italy?

As in the case of United States President Joe Biden referring to Donald Trump and ‘‘Maga Republicans” as “semifascists” who “pose a threat to the rule of law”, the ODT is following the same liberal playbook calling her a fascist.

After years of Italy being a raging dumpster fire, the people have spoken. They want change.

Who cares what the ODT or New Zealand thinks? We have our own problems to focus on.
