Raptors netballers nail world record for charity
SPONSORS for the 24hour shootathon will be feeling the pinch in their pockets after the Invercargill netball community charged its way into the Guinness Book of World Records in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Fundraiser organiser Andrea de Vries said the Raptors team broke the record about 3am. The other teams had also broken the old record by 6am.
By the end of the fundraiser the Raptors had shot 31,363 goals — annihilating the previous world record of 14,248 set by Britain’s Lancaster, Capernwray Netball Club, in September 2018.
Netball community members rallied to set the world record for the most goals shot in 24 hours as a fundraiser for the Southland Charity Hospital.
Some corporate sponsors had pledged $1 per goal.
‘‘It’s been amazing. We’ve touched base with about 100 businesses that are donating $1 per shot. Some of them put a cap on it so they could budget for it.
‘‘The generosity of the community has been so amazing. Times are tough and people have just gone out of their way to support this.’’
It would be some time before the total amount raised could be finalised as the event also had a GiveALittle page running in conjunction with the event ’’ Ms de Vries said.
The 24hour event had been witnessed and recorded to provide verification to apply for the record with the Guinness World Records management team.
