Hydrogen scheme could be a lot of hot air
PHILIP Temple (Letters, 23.5.23) is right with respect to Southland hydrogen.
It is a bad location from which to compete for sales of green hydrogen or ammonia on distant markets. Contact Energy has already bailed out of Southland’s “world’s largest green hydrogen plant”, which could vanish like a mirage.
Nor will Southland produce hydrogen for New Zealand because you don’t transport hydrogen around the country in tanks.
The hydrogen will be generated close to point of use from small plants using grid electricity.

Delicacy for beachcombers
While some residents of St Kilda were strolling along the Ocean Beach yesterday afternoon their attention was attracted by what looked like a log. One of their number ventured into the water and discovered the object to be a fine specimen of a frostfish, which, on being hauled ashore was estimated to have measured 8 feet long and to have weighed close on 100 pounds.
A number of spectators were attracted, and the fish was soon cut up and carried away.
One of the fortunate finders afterwards expressed the opinion that the fish made prime eating.
Centenary of first marriage
The centenary of the first marriage solemnised in New Zealand will fall in June. The wedding took place in the mission house at Mata Hui, the present site of the Marsden Cross in the Bay of Islands, on June 23, 1823. year substitute for the Onslow scheme. A southern dry year will reduce Manapouri power station output as well.
There is no question that the Onslow scheme is expensive. It would only be built if a detailed business case showed that the national gain for 100 years of operational lifetime merited the significant construction cost.

Crime and punishment
IT'S very sad to read that the owner of the Post Shop at Titirangi has decided
The parties were Mr Philip Tapsell, first mate of the ship Asp, and a Maori woman of high birth named Maria Ringa, sometimes spelt and to close for good after numerous thefts from his shop. He rightly, in my view, blames the justice system for not doing enough to discourage criminal behaviour.
As I read the daily crime reports in the ODT, I see so many reports of offenders who appear before local courts time and time again.
Clearly, the sanctions imposed by the courts have little or no impact upon them.
It must be galling for police to catch offenders and then learn that the courts have imposed light sentences which the offenders largely ignore. Julian Faigan
Roslyn pronounced Dinga.
The ceremony was performed according to the Church of England form by the Rev Thomas Kendall.
Nobody is perfect, so those who are waiting for a saint to solve world problems are waiting in vain. Among her other errors is Pamela Richie's assertion that the framers of the American Constitution and the Declaration of Independence were not Christians. Consider the words of John Adams: ‘‘The Declaration of Independence laid the cornerstone of human government upon the first precepts of Christianity’’.
