Valley’s domination continues

- NIC DUFF

IT was almost a country clean sweep in the Citizens Shield on Saturday.

The country teams recorded two wins out of the three games played.

Valley beat Old Boys 3819, and Kurow downed Excelsior 4133.

Maheno came agonisingly close to completing the trifecta but lost 4240 to Athletic Marist.

Valley continued its dominant season with a convincing win over Old Boys in Oamaru.

The Weston club side shot out to a commanding 240 lead in the first half, and grabbed two more tries in the second half.

Valley dominated the match throughout, but did let Old Boys score two late consolation tries to bring some respectability to the score.

Sam Sturgess had another strong outing in the pack and was rewarded with two tries to remain the leading tryscorer in the competition.

The Valley backline was again superb with Jake Matthews and Asesela Ravuvu providing plenty of spark at halfback and wing respectively.

Kurow, ahead of its 125th celebrations, recorded a second win in a row as it beat Excelsior at home.

Kurow came flying out of the gates with 27 firsthalf points to have Blues on the back foot.

But not to be counted out, Excelsior came charging back with a big secondhalf effort.

Unfortunately for the town club, it would be too little, too late as it ultimately fell short of a comeback.

Hayden Parker was outstanding in leading defending champion Kurow around the park.

Scoring was the name of the game as Athletic Marist beat Maheno.

The two teams combined for 82 points in a highscoring thriller in which Athies escaped with a narrow twopoint victory.

Mason Kinzett proved to be the point of difference as he had a perfect day from the kicking tee.
