Bad news for rivals of Telfer pair

- JONNY TURNER

LEADUP runs do not get much better than those Built For Glory and Double Jeopardy produced ahead of the group 2 Alabar Southern Supremacy Stakes Final.

The Stonewall Stud pairing came to Southland for the last heat of the series and burned up the Winton track last weekend, finishing onetwo.

Built For Glory took top honours when backing up an excellent heat win at the same track with an even more explosive effort.

The bad news for his Southern Supremacy Stakes Rivals is that cotrainer Amanda Telfer expects the pacer to strip in even better shape tomorrow.

“I think he will actually benefit from the run. I really do,” Telfer said.

In between his heat wins, Built For Glory’s form hit a speed bump when he broke at Addington.

The 3yearold put that behind him in the best possible style at Winton, after some finetuning at Stonewall Stud’s South Island Base.

Stonewall Stud team member Terry Chmiel predicted Built For Glory was back on top of his game before his Winton win and the horse proved that in devastating style.

“He was good at Winton. We sort of lost him there for a bit and we did a bit of work at home,” Telfer said.

“Terry said before he came down that we had him right and he was 100%.”

Double Jeopardy charged home late behind Built For Glory, running a scorching last 150m to take ground off the winner.

Telfer also expects the 3yearold to strip a fitter and more potent prospect on Diamonds Day.

“He hit the line really nicely and I think it is the same with him. He is a fat little colt and with racing and a little bit of work he is coming to it.”

Though the Stonewall Stud pairing are expected to strip fitter for the feature, their main rival is expected to do the same.

Dreams Are Free had his shot to down Built For Glory and Double Jeopardy in last week’s heat when leading throughout.

The pacer fought on creditably to run third, but had few excuses.

The race was Dreams Are Free’s first since his twostart campaign in Auckland in March.

Trainerdriver Nathan Williamson expects to see a bigger performance from his classy colt with the benefit he has taken from last week’s outing.
