Canon Summer Snap contest winners unveiled

-

The six winning photos in the Canon Summer Snap competition have been chosen.

Great Outdoors winner Catherine Song was praised by the judges for the ‘‘excellent’’ framing and symmetry of her photo.

It captured golfers in the early morning low mist over the Waihi Golf Club.

Judge and Stuff visual journalist Alden Williams congratulated Song for an excellent job capturing the golden light against the fog, which would likely have been shortlived. ‘‘Well done.’’

Janna Sanford was named winner of the Urban Life category with her image which she described as ‘‘camouflage in the city’’. The judges said the beautiful image captured ‘‘a nice natural moment’’.

Bach and Backyard category winner Kelvin Wong said his photo captured his daughter on a classic rope swing above Raumati Beach in the early evening.

Judge Kyle Morris said the image captured the magic of the moment, ‘‘a simple rope swing and an empty beach – the perfect place to relax and contemplate’’.

Morris said photographer Allan Hansen captured a classic summer ritual with his great photo, winner of the Thrill and Adventure category.

Hansen said his picture was showing ‘‘adventurous Kiwis of all ages [ who] can’t resist an adrenalin-filled jump from this ancient po¯hutukawa into a deep turquoise pool’’.

The winner of the Kiwi Summer category was Bronwyn Gallagher with an evocative picture of a young woman preparing for a day of bodyboarding fun in the sun.

Judge Carol Hirschfeld said: ‘‘This beach scene anticipates the sheer joy of diving into an action-packed Kiwi summer’s day – blue skies, white-crested waves and enough boogie boards for everyone!

‘‘The carefree spirit captured here seems like the perfect antidote to a year which most of us spent bubbling at home.’’

The winner of the People and Communities photo was Graham Fisher with a stunning photo of Christchurch’s New Brighton pier.

He described it as the last full moon of 2021.

‘‘People out everywhere along the beach with these families enjoying the special view from . . . [the] pier. What a beautiful and amazing evening for everyone.’’

The picture won 52.5 per cent of the votes from the Neighbourly community.
