War stories told with art
A commemorative exhibition will be shown in Morrinsville’s Wallace Gallery for six weeks, showcasing the cataclysmic events of war.
Hamilton artist Elwyn Stone created her artworks as a direct response to war and to the legacy passed on to the generations who have not known war.
Her work has also evolved from a personal war story, she said. Her father was a returned World War II serviceman.
‘‘This collection is unique in that, rather than focusing on specific battles and actions, it aims to depict in a conceptual sense, multi-layered, juxtaposed images, a precis of World War.’’
Inspired to depict part of a soldier’s story during the war, Stone created a series of paintings from a soldier’s perspective.
She said the next step of the creative process was to research ways in which light could illuminate and engage the audience.
‘‘It is a window in time through the lens of a woman’s perspective on war,’’ she said.
The exhibition offers the audience a place to pause and reflect on the commemorations around World War I, Stone said.
‘‘These artworks are a poignant reminder of loss, achievement, transformation and remembrance.’’
‘And When He Was Called, He Went’, showing at Wallace Gallery, 167 Thames St, Morrinsville until March 19.
