Memorial trophy returns to Waihou

Waihou has taken back the Paul Herbert Memorial Trophy after a close encounter with Mercury Bay, in the latest round of Thames Valley club rugby.

Waihou won Saturday’s premier rugby game 23-22 after, the two teams came to an 18-all draw earlier in the season.

The Paul Herbert Memorial Trophy is played for every time the two clubs meet.

Herbert was a former Mercury Bay player and later became a stalwart of Waihou club rugby.

He played provincial rugby for Thames Valley, locking the scum in 1978, 1982-1984.

In the Senior A division, Cobras were too strong for Coromandel, winning 43-0.

Thames Valley players selected for the under 19 and senior squads were also in action on Queen’s Birthday, June 4, playing a Corinthian­s selection at Bedford Park in Matamata.

The Thames valley Under 19s won their match 18-12 while the seniors lost to Corinthian­s, 29-17.

Premiers - Paeroa 0-53 Waihi Athletic; Mercury Bay 22-23 Waihou; Thames 20-08 Tairua. Senior A: Cobras 43-0

Results:

Coromandel; Hauraki North won by default over Mercury Bay; Whangamata 29-27 Waihi Athletic. Senior B: Waihou 22-15 Hauraki North; Paeroa 26-3 Cobras; Thames 36-12 Ngatea.

Morrinsvil­le Sports travelled over to Hamilton to play Melville in week 1, of the second round, of the Premiershi­p A competitio­n.

The Morrinsvil­le team’s only points were by its captain, Josh Janmaat, who scored a try which went uncoverted.

The hosts however ran in seven tries at home, three to No.8 Timoti Marr, bringing the final score to 45-5 to Melville.

The scores were a bit closer in the Premier B competitio­n but the outcome was the same, Morrinsvil­le Sports 14 and Melville 33.

This weekend Morrinsvil­le will be looking for some better results, heading back to Hamilton to take on Fraser Tech, which was defeated by Hautapu 34-15 on Saturday.
