Pretty coun­try farm­ing vil­lage

Kaipara Flats is rolling tree-lined sheep and cat­tle coun­try just north of Wark­worth. The tiny vil­lage has be­come pop­u­lar with lifestyle farm­ers and fam­i­lies that want to live in a coun­try at­mos­phere. It has a pri­mary school, which was es­tab­lished in 1878, vil­lage hall, a play­cen­tre in an old church, and a sports club with ten­nis courts. The vil­lage is only 14km from Wark­worth. Just off Kaipara Flats Rd there’s a small air­field that’s home to the Rod­ney Aero Club, which of­fers lessons and scenic flights. Near the be­gin­ning of Kaipara Flats Rd there’s Horse Rid­ing Wark­worth, run by Heather and Roger Macken­zie, which of­fers farm horse treks. If trav­ellers keep head­ing west they will come to State High­way 16 and the Kaipara Har­bour. The har­bour is the largest in­land water­way in the south­ern hemi­sphere and a pop­u­lar shark fish­ing ground in the days of early set­tle­ment. In the 1870s, Kaipara Flats had the largest gum­field in the area with other pock­ets found on Matakana Rd and at Snells Beach. The Kaipara Flats Com­mu­nity Her­itage So­ci­ety is hold­ing a fundrais­ing dance on March 15, call Vanessa on 422 5242 for tick­ets. There’s also a monthly mar­ket held at the vil­lage hall.
