The heart of Rodney and the Hibiscus Coast beats in Orewa – the nerve centre of Rodney’s business activities. It is head office for the Rodney District Council, and the home of Rodney’s biggest single residential development, the Nautilus. It is also a popular holiday resort and has one of the finest beaches in New Zealand. The beach extends along the length of the town, providing a broad, sandy promenade at low tide. Extensive grassy reserves and a children’s playground border the beach. The town centre has a great variety of shops and services, and many new subdivisions are springing up as its boundaries continue to extend into the surrounding countryside. Flat land at the centre of town is popular with young families and elderly folk. A short distance from the town centre the land rises steeply, offering homes wonderful views overlooking Orewa and the beach. The motorway, which presently stops at Orewa, brings North Auckland within an easy 20-minute drive. Centrestage Theatre hosts many local and visiting artists and there is a great selection of restaurants and bars for entertainment. A number of schools, from preschool to secondary, are provided in Orewa and Silverdale. Orewa is also close to the Whangaparaoa Peninsula, Waiwera and towns further north, making it an ideal shopping and commercial business centre for residents in those areas too.
