You just need dedication

- RENEE CLAYTON

A 76-year-old speed walker has been named the oldest competitor to win this years North Shore half marathon.

After retiring in Arkles Bay, it wasn’t until John Kingdon was told by his psychotherapist in 1999 that he had to walk to increase hip movement that he found his passion for walking.

Kingdon came first out of 87 people in the 21.2 kilometer open men’s section this month with a time of 2:36:08.

At 65, Kingdon completed his first marathon and worked his way up to then win the Orewa half marathon in 2011.

‘‘Winning made me want to compete in the North Shore marathon.‘‘ Kingdon says.

Every five years Kingdon tries to compete in a marathon that can take him around 12 weeks to prepare for.

‘‘My tips are to gradually build yourself up to the distance prior to the event and have a healthy diet.’’

Before competing, Kingdon completed the distance twice around Arkles Bay.

‘‘Around my home I have a lot of hills which are good for my fitness. I get a lot of pleasure out of walking first thing in the morning, it makes me feel good.’’

Inspired by his win, Kingdon plans to compete in the Wanganui NZ Masters in February.

‘‘You are never too old, you just need dedication,’’ Kingdon says.
