Orewa seawall design feedback sought
Feedback is being sought by Auckland Council on its designs for the seawall which will halt erosion at the northern end of Orewa beach.
The council wants to hear what residents think about its construction plans and resource consent application for a coastal walkway and seawall between Kohu St and Marine View.
The application includes the installation of a 600 metre long wall to provide a permanent longterm solution to ongoing storm erosion.
The wall will consist of a sloped rock revetment of boulders, with basalt block and grout walls at locations where ramp and stair access is required. Vertical upstands on the basalt sections are proposed in two phases. The first seeing a 150mm upstand with the future phase at 800mm to accommodate potential sea level rise.
The application also includes a footpath and landscaping along the esplanade reserve behind the wall, access structures including ramps and stairs, and parks infrastructure and amenities such as landscaping, drainage and lighting.
The proposal also sees associated works within Kinloch Reserve, including the replacement of the existing footbridge, relocation of the water main, construction of a timber groyne at the mouth of the channel and naturalisation of the dune. It is also proposed to store construction materials in Victor Eaves Park.
‘‘The public notification period gives residents the opportunity to find out more ...’’
Plans also enhance recreation options and walking and cycling connections, the council said.
Council head of project delivery, John Schermbrucker, said finalising the details of the seawall was an exciting time in the long term project.
‘‘The public notification period gives residents the opportunity to find out more about the finalised proposed seawall design and associated works. When it’s completed the seawall will enable greater access for more people‘‘
Public feedback closes at 5pm May 12. For more information visit aucklandcouncil.govt.nz, drop into council’s Orewa Service Centre or call senior planner Simon Titter on 09 301 0101.
