Rugby club begins $1.6m upgrade
Renovations have started on the Silverdale Rugby and Sports Club in north Auckland.
The $1.6 million upgrade involves a reconfiguration on the ground floor to make an improved premises for tenants, and external renovations to create a more modern facility.
The upgrade started on February 19 and is planned to be finished by November.
The club’s financial director Chris Cater said there will be four stages to the renovations.
‘‘Stage three and four will be upgrades to the lounge and member bars on the first and second floor of the building.’’
At the moment the club has 1500 members.
‘‘We are like a big family here and are different from other sport environments because we are a privately owned and a non-profit group.’’
The club was established 130 years ago and has been a major part of the community.
Rugby has been played in the Orewa, Silverdale, Hibiscus Coast and adjoining areas since 1887 and the current site of the Club was purchased in 1965.
The club is the largest junior club in the North Harbour Union.
The club’s junior rugby registrations are coming up as well as a junior sevens rugby tournament on March 24.
