Derby on the way
Orewa Beach Kindergarten’s famous Ducky Derby is all it’s quacked up to be.
Birds of a feather may flock together, but there can only be one winner of the upcoming Orewa Beach Ducky Derby.
The annual fundraiser for Orewa Beach Kindergarten is now in its eighth year, and with more ducks in the flock, it’s all set for its biggest race ever.
The last eight years have seen the fundraiser go from strength to strength, head teacher Viv Wilcock said.
‘‘We’re really fortunate because the community really gets behind us. It’s known now, and it’s building on itself every year,’’ she said.
This year’s profits will go towards the centre’s first Wha¯nau Room - a safe place for families, students, and external agencies like Women’s Refuge and SYFS to use.
This year’s flock of yellow rubber ducks has grown from 500 to 750, and will include a number of larger ducks that can be sponsored by businesses.
A ‘‘duck wrangler’’ will be on site ensure rogue ducks don’t ‘‘end up in Brazil, or wherever’’.
The Ducky Derby runs from 10am-1pm on March 4 by the Orewa Skatepark.
