Auckland Council is saving hundreds of thousands of dollars by reshuffling its vehicle fleet. In the first half of 2018 council will sell 16 of its 822 cars, generating about $247,000. Purchasing 13 new vehicles was also avoided through the redeployment of existing fleet vehicles, resulting in $325,000 in savings. A new reallocation policy will result in council’s general vehicle pool nearly doubling in size from 116 vehicles to 224, however, the exact number is yet to be finalised. Almost 200 vehicles will become dedicated to specific roles rather than being part of a pool allocated to a specific business unit. Additionally, a plan to replace 50 cars with electric vehicles (EVs) or plug-in hybrids over the next three years is also in the works with Auckland Transport.
