Lakefront petition: Where do I sign?

-

Back in the 1950s, they built the Soundshell at the lakefront, great for New Year’s Eve entertainment from the outdoor stage, and the inside theatre was used for orchestral concerts, pipe band competitions and more.

But it was run down over the decades and is to be demolished.

In the 1960s they built at the Lakefront a short, curved brick wall with a bench each side and a gable roof, for visitors to shelter from sun or rain. It cost more than twice what a house would cost to build, but it vanished (when?)

A former mayor wanted to have a canal dug along the north end of Tutanekai St.

All the lake weed would have blown in during northerly winds, the waterfowl would have made an awful mess, and it would have needed a lot of maintenance.

Fortunately, that project was canned.

Now they want to build a boardwalk out over the water. The wind will blow the weed over it, and the birds will use it to roost and as a toilet. It will take constant work to keep it clean.

Parents will have to keep a very close eye on little ones, so they don’t step off into the water.

From a report on the council meeting about the project and the bitter comments made, it seems that they are determined that it will go ahead despite the opposition. Now, where is that petition? I want to sign it! Ronald Mayes

Rotorua Lovely morning (October 6), but the delight faded after I had happily skipped out to retrieve the Rotorua Daily Post. It was one of those bad news days.

Helicopter gone, gruesome murder with all the details, the fate of our dogs collected for the pound, and then the possible horrors of our new parking system which sounds so incredibly complicated that my poor brain gave up.

What about the disabled car parks . . . what about this or that situation. It was all too much. I can’t bear it — as an old, loved friend used to wail, hands in the air. The Rotorua Anglers Association has just completed another successful Fish Out at the hatchery. Thanks to Fish & Game that’s 250 more children introduced to fly fishing for trout and hopefully a love of the outdoors and the Kiwi way of life.

CC McDowall (Letters, October 6) you stand as much chance as getting rid of the All Blacks. Rod Hinitt
