India records 168,912 Covid-19 infections in a single day

-

India has overtaken Brazil as the second-worst-hit country behind the United States, recording 168,912 Covid19 infections in a single day.

The latest figure marks a new daily record for the subcontinent nation, which has registered 13.53 million confirmed cases of the coronavirus since the global outbreak last year.

The nation now has 9842 cases per million, which is still a far cry from the US, which has 31.9 million confirmed cases at a rate of 96,143 per million.

A move to reopen the country after a lengthy lockdown period has led to a surge in cases among the subcontinent’s 1.39 billion population. Civilians participating in a number of religious festivals and political rallies have only hurt the nation’s response to the outbreak, which has claimed more than 170,000 Indian lives.

Officials confirmed 880 new deaths in the past 24 hours.

The latest rise in cases has seen India labelled as the globe’s new Covid19 epicentre, after officials discovered a mutant “double strain” in Maharashtra, which is home to India’s financial capital of Mumbai.

India’s drive to vaccinate its 1.3 billion people also looks to be hitting problems, with just 94 million shots administered so far and stocks running low, according to local authorities.
