Pick your trees

Bare-rooted fruit trees will be arriving in garden centres about now, so decide what you want to grow and eat, choose them and get them planted.

Plant shallot bulbs and you’ll be able to the green shoots as a substitute for chives. They’re great grown in a terracotta tub close to the kitchen.

Spring a leek

Feed your leeks with chook poo and keep them well-weeded. if you don't have friends with chooks, maybe this is your time to get some.

Drying time

If it's been raining a lot where you are and your compost is sodden, add some dry material like oat straw to help to dry it out. Then make it a cover to protect it from too much rain.
