Personality overflows with extra space and entertainment

- By Jo Ferris

There are homes that have that element of surprise. Then there’s a small group that blow the mind. This is one such home – not simply how its street-front teases what’s inside. It’s what sits behind that is a revelation.

Sitting in an inner-city street of character and position, first impressions introduce a weatherboard bungalow based on colonial lines. Obviously adapted with the times, its flawless greeting introduces a fully fenced property with wrought-iron gated entry.

It’s here the surprises begin. The first comes when looking inside out – to the fence. Painted floral panels suggest

this is a home filled with personality and originality. It’s a pure delight, gazing out from the sunny corner of the cushioned window seat as the floral artistry blends with the trees in the street behind.

The décor blends traditional character – in keeping with the home’s era

– while contemporary twists instil individuality. Wainscotting is a big feature. Grooved half-wall panelling features throughout, with wallpaper and colour personalising each room. Open-plan living maximises space and

light, with the kitchen at the

rear to ensure it links with formal dining inside, but also serious fun outside in the back yard.

Designer styling maintains the colonial theme with kitchen cabinetry – ample workspace and storage,

granite counters, a Belling stove for serious cooks and a clever island that tucks the bar-stool element into its own space. It’s when the French doors open to the sheltered deck that this home unveils the depth of its opportunity. While there are four bedrooms and two bathrooms inside the house, outdoors there’s brilliant space for family, friends or guests. It’s party central – complete with a cobbled patio sitting centre stage with a pizza oven as the main feature.

A separate cottage is charming. Board and batten finish and a sunny verandah to enjoy time outdoors. Self-contained with one bedroom, bathroom and wellappointed kitchenette, this is perfect to bring parents back into the fold – especially with its ramp connection with the main house.

There’s a third accommodation behind the garage – a one-bedroom unit with bathroom, living area with tea-making facilities and room for a fridge. Also useful for extended family, this is ideal for the teen and visitors, but superb as a workplace.

The final surprise awaits above the garage. The sign and artwork lining the stairs are a giveaway sign that this is the ultimate man cave. Brilliantly lined with limewashed ply – it boasts storage and space to spread out and make music, play cards or challenge at darts.

With solar panels on the roof, gardens for veges and safe playground space for the kids and dogs, there’s a lot to take in. Take time to feel this property’s heart, then start planning how to use all the space.
