FROM THE TRAVEL EDITOR
We’ve covered New York a lot in Herald Travel lately, thanks in part to the new Air NZ direct route that launched in September, as well as the news from Qantas that they’ll be following suit in June next year. But it’s also because no matter how many times and how long you visit, it’s still so hard to narrow down what you should do while you’re there.
It’s the only destination where I get fomo (fear of missing out) at the same time I’m busy enjoying myself. I’ll be at a rooftop bar enjoying the view as the sun sets over the Hudson River, but there’ll also be a mild level of anxiety that there might be a better bar, with a better view just around the corner. Or perhaps I shouldn’t be in a bar at all? Maybe there’s a show I should be at, or a museum to visit, or a restaurant to go to
... help!
So this week’s story on p24 featuring a borough-by-borough guide to the best things to do in New York is invaluable reading — add some of the recommendations to Google
Maps and you’ll have a prearranged itinerary ready to go, before you’ve even left NZ.
We’re also championing another great US city this week, with Sarah Pollok’s account on p28 of how to spend two days in Boston. The Massachusetts’ gem is easy to get to from New York — a less than four-hour scenic journey by train — but it offers a totally different perspective on big city America.
