Welcome to our timely celebration of a New Zealand real estate icon: the summer bach. It’s safe to say that most Kiwis dream of owning a holiday home by the beach. And our research into the state of the bach market post-covid shows just how many Kiwis realised that dream. There was a surge in second-home purchases in coastal locations around New Zealand in 2020 and 2021, as buyers responded to border closures and record-low interest rates.

It’s clear from the prices being paid that some locations are more popular than others and that the luxury end of the bach market has done extremely well. For those in the market, we’ve also produced a helpful guide to buying a holiday home.

Our final Property Report of 2022 also contains our endof-year review of the housing market. We’ve identified the winners and losers in what has been a turbulent 12 months in real estate and given our predictions for 2023.

Also inside are the latest suburb values for all of New Zealand, provided by our data partner, Valocity, and insights and commentary from independent economist Tony Alexander, property commentator Ashley Church and mortgage broker Rupert Gough.
