Future park for town of the future
Rolleston, town of the future, has welcomed a new type of space age fun to Selwyn.
New Zealand’s first Playground Centre (PGC) Smart Playground opened last week in Levi Park. The park has been transformed into a Smart Playground as part of a 90-day trial aimed at bridging the gap between digital and physical play. It was hoped it would be a way to decrease screen time among children. Six augmented reality markers were now attached to existing playground equipment at Levi Park, which could be scanned by parents and children to activate mini-games and unlock new play content aimed at three to nine-year olds. Parents could download the games free from the App Store or on Google Play, by searching for ‘playbiba’. PGC CEO Simon Filleul said his company was excited to work with the Selwyn District Council (SDC) to trial the Smart Playground.
‘‘The set-up process is relatively simple for any council or playground manager wanting to add a new digital dimension to their existing playgrounds,’’ Filleul said.
At the end of the trial period the SDC would assess whether to incorporate Smart Playground technology at other playgrounds in Selwyn.
