Bombshells primed and ready to fire

- PETRA FINER

There were not enough men prepared to act in Hawera Repertory’s Christmas-themed production, so director Clive Cullen decided on an all-women show.

Audiences will be pleased he did.

The six actresses performing in Hawera Repertory’s November production of Bombshells have been working hard in preparation for their roles.

Each will perform a one-act play around 15 minutes long and director Clive Cullen said all performances were coming together well.

‘‘Its been interesting and exciting because each performer is able to explore and present their own character individually with a lot of emotion and focus,’’ he said.

‘‘There’s just one person on stage at a time and they are the whole show. There’s a lot more intensity and energy coming from each performer.’’

Cullen said each woman was thriving on the challenge.

‘‘It’s a play not for younger audiences as there’s some language and some content that may offend some people.’’

Jane Lawrence, who plays Winsome Webster - a widow with an appetite for the unexpected agreed and said she was enjoying the challenge.

‘‘It’s fascinating to perform this way because there’s nowhere to hide because there is no actor on stage but you.’’

A newcomer to the stage in Hawera, Angelique Poczwa will play Theresa McTerry - an

increasingly disillusioned socialite bride on her wedding day.

Lorraine Wilkie will be Tiggy Entwhistle, a cactus lover bravely attempting to rise above her relationship crisis.

Zoe Snowdon will play Mary O’Donnell, a feisty teenage schoolgirl preparing herself for a talent show.

Hollie Weir will perform as Meryl Davenport in a part she knows well, a non-stop day in the life of a stay-at-home mum, and Cherol Filbee will play Zoe Struthers, a ’’has been’’ cabaret singer attempting to strut her stuff and make a comeback.

‘‘Over all it’s six funny and perceptive plays about modern life,’’ Cullen said.

It will be on stage at the Hawera Repertory House, Collins Street, from Friday November 4 to Saturday November 19.

Tickets are available at the Hawera i-Site and Ticket Direct.
