Athletic boom for high school

Recently Hawera High School students competed in the annual school athletics championsh­ips.

Despite unfavourab­le conditions on the day, a number of athletes broke a range of school records.

Lara Hockly, Year 9, helped herself to two junior girl records the 300-metre and the triple jump.

This was the second year in a row that the triple jump record was improved upon after Faith Araba broke it last year.

In the intermedia­te girls division Ellie Hurley-Langton broke the 80m hurdle record by an entire second. She dropped it from 13.75 seconds to 12.72s.

The other three records were set in the seniors’ division.

Alana Ryan added 2.5m to the senior girls shot put record, Rowan Anderson broke the 110m hurdle record and AJ Newton improved on the school’s senior boys shot put mark.

The overall champions of the school were: junior girl Lara Hockley, junior boy Bailey Royal, intermedia­te girl Faith Araba, intermedia­te boy Todd Soothill, senior girl Sharlaye Bardsley and senior boy Zach Chapman.

In the always competitiv­e House competitio­n, Green House came out on top for 2017.

From these championsh­ips a large team of athletes were selected to compete at the Taranaki Secondary Schools Sports Associatio­n

‘‘Hawera High School came home with 54 podium places.’’

(TSSSA) Athletics Sports. Hawera High School came home with 54 podium places.

The school’s junior and intermedia­te girls’ relay teams came out on top and this capped some outstandin­g individual achievemen­ts.

The school excelled across all the discipline­s, both field and track. Two great examples of this were the intermedia­te and senior girls hammer throw and the intermedia­te girls triple jump.

Two of our students completely dominated the intermedia­te and senior girls hammer throw competitio­n. Alana Ryan added 16m to the senior girls record, throwing 47.41m and Nicole Bennett also broke the open record when she threw 46.57m, setting an intermedia­te girls record too.

Another event in which Hawera led the way was the intermedia­te girls triple jump.

Athletes from the school gained four of the top five placings. Leading the way were Jessica Farmer and Faith Araba who both jumped personal bests for first and second place respective­ly.

The school is one of those leading in the sport of athletics in Taranaki. Headlines in the Star: America – The Presidenti­al Declaratio­n. German recent acts. Nothing more nor less than war on America.

President Wilson in opening his speech, said war with Germany would involve practical co-operation with the people now fighting Germany.

Dr A Dillon Carbery, late of Stratford, who has been at the front almost from the beginning of the war has been awarded the DSO.

Last Saturday I met Alby Hurrell, Ted Jury, Billy McNiven and Joe Richardson and yesterday Jack Matthews, Archie Cameron, Brown and Billy Donnelly the chemist. We all had a good old yarn. Let them know we are all well and jolly.’’

Mrs Collier was the delicatess­en manageress at Tom’s Supermarke­t.

Wedding Bells: Neville Lewis (Mataura) married Marie Dryden (Kaponga); Anne Turnill (England) married Terry Wolfe (Eltham); Merryn Dunlop (Auroa) married Donald Hastie (Manaia).

Afternoon TV started: Mrs Lillie felt afternoon TV would be beneficial to elderly people; a mother of seven Mrs M Doyle said she wouldn’t have time to watch it but thought it would perhaps be good in the winter.

Rugby: Hawera on paper appears strong for the coming season with the ever improving Pat Rail with newcomers Lyn Parkes (loose forward) and promoted junior John Urb and former third grader Nigel Hayman. Last year’s players John McGrath, Don Crossman, Sandy Parata, Hugh Roberts, Andy Potts, Charlie Te Awhe, Joe Richardson, Dudley Jordan, Graham Kennedy, Brian Laird and Dave Rongonui will also turn out for the club.

In hot tiring conditions G Allan won the Hawera Harriers’ pack run (9 miles), Dombroski came in second followed by G Savage.

Opunake High School Tennis champions were: Junior girls Winnie Kahui, boys Ian Dawson; senior girls Dianne Young, boys Ross Boyd; doubles girls Ann Kenyon & Elaine Phillips; boys Robert Donnelly and Bruce McCall.

Births: Cameron to Jocelyn and Ron a son; O’Keeffe to Michael and Kathy a son.

Jessica Low had her photo in the Star painting a masterpiec­e at Ramanui Playcentre.

Little Alisha Reed with a helping hand from her mum Kellie also had her photo in the Star on the

Ramanui Play centre swing.

Shirley Harris of Hawera was the winner in the Toyota Starlet challenge and was presented with her prize by the owners of South Taranaki Toyota Lance Wagstaff and Christine Sole-Wagstaff.

Donating blood can be fun as these students, from left, Deanne Staines, Donna Leigh, Nicola Bailey, Prudence Ropiha, Marc Trott, Cindy Cameron and Steve Borrie found out this week. Around 120 sixth and seventh form students from Hawera High School have donated their blood to assist the community over the last few weeks.
