New seats for new project

- JANE MATTHEWS

The playground that’s always filled with joy and almost always full of children will soon have extra seats for supervisors.

Hawera’s King Edward Park’s playground will become four seats richer thanks to an International Lions Club Centennial project.

Normanby and District Lions Club president Tony Madgwick said the club wanted to use the project somewhere where the gesture would be appreciated.

‘‘Lions clubs throughout the world are planning a centennial club project to recognise this great milestone,’’ Madgwick said.

‘‘So we decided to donate four park bench seats to King Edward Park for public use.’’

At this stage only one park bench is in place, the other three are in storage.

David Bruce, the curator at King Edward Park, said the park benches were a lovely idea.

‘‘They’re going around the children’s playground area for the mums and grandmums and dads,’’ Bruce said. ’’Because it can be very busy at times.’’

Bruce said there were developments taking place in the near future so the bench seats would be put out as the developments happened.

Madgwick said the Lions Club didn’t mind where they went because they would be in good use anywhere.

‘‘We gave them to them and said ‘you decide where you want them’,’’ he said.
