Great entertainment

- REVIEW BY RICHARD KENNEDYMOFFAT

Returning to their traditional form of entertainment, under the heading of Back to the Future, the Hawera Women’s Club Music Circle presented a two-night season of relaxing and popular music. This strong choir easily transcended a wide range of music. Starting with the classical section with favourites by Offenbach, Schubert and Haydn the evening rolled on to wellknown Gospel songs. If I had a Hammer, Oh Mary!, Daniel Jazz and Rhythm of Life - all combining into a toe-tapping appreciation.

A highly proficient piano duet with Anne Hoogeveen and Claudia Bluett playing Rambunctious and Hoagy Carmichael’s Stardust, was followed later, with Gladys Armstrong reminding us of the America’s Cup, by playing Sailing. In this non-stop variety show we were entertained with Hats,Shoes and Jeans – three numbers by members of the choir. All the choir enthusiastically chimed in with popular hits of the 60’s Those Were the Days, Johnny Angel, To Sir With Love, Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow and I Will Follow Him.

When Dame Hilda Hackett and Evadne Hinge took to the stage the appreciative audience rocked with laughter. They laughed and gasped not only at the humour but at the amazing talent displayed by Gladys who capably played the piano with one hand, stood up and waved her other hand in a circular motion, and sang at the same time. Gladys Armstrong and Vivien Taylor’s performance was a moment to treasure.

A great evening, well choreographed, well costumed and well rehearsed with musical direction.
