Have you thought about helping migrants with their English language?

Have you thought about how hard it must be to learn all our Kiwi sayings (that are not standard English) – what does ‘‘she’ll be right mate’’ mean – how about ‘‘Tiki tour’’ or ‘‘No worries’’

It might be automatic to us to know that ‘‘She’ll be right’’ means everything will be OK or all right, that a ‘‘Tiki tour’’ is a scenic or longer route to a destination; and ‘‘No worries’’ is usually used as a reply to being thanked. But how about someone for whom this is all new?

How did you feel when you went to Australia and they called a chilly bin an Esky or called jandals thongs? (And we speak the same English)

Here is an opportunity, to help someone for whom English is not their first language learn about what that all means.

There is a training programme to help you – you don’t have to be a teacher or have previous experience, just have a genuine interest in helping and willingness to upskill.

English Language Partners Taranaki is looking for new volunteers to help with this and is offering the Certificate in ESOL Home Tutoring FEE FREE for this next intake.
