South Taranaki Star

Designer living, family space

- Mike Shaw

A unique look and setting captured Ben and Vicky when they first saw 19 McCarthy St in Hawera four years ago.

The appeal began with the location. McCarthy St is a quiet suburban neighbourhood, a link between Fairfield Rd and Puriri St on the south side of the town.

‘‘It’s close to town, and we have views to the water tower and mountain from the bedrooms and balcony upstairs,’’ Ben and Vicky say.

They also appreciated the seclusion that complemented the peaceful location, with the 280sqm four-bedroom home set at the end of a private driveway into the L-shaped 983m2 property. The home impressed the moment they saw it - a two-level, modular, architect-designed residence in a plastered finish, built in the early 2000s.

The couple describe their home as ‘‘unique ... different ... and aesthetically pleasing.’’

The visual appeal continued when they stepped through the double cedar entry doors in the sheltered porch adjacent the double garage into the foyer welcome.

‘‘It was light and bright, with a skylight and glass bricks.’’

From the entry, there is an easy flow through the house.

To the left is the separate laundry, guest toilet, and a downstairs bedroom.

The pale polished tiles lead from the foyer into the large open-plan kitchen-dining-family living space, with a carpeted lounge area adjacent.

Those tiles are warmed by the under-floor heating that is installed throughout the lower level of the home.

The designer kitchen makes a statement with its combination of timber-grained cabinetry and black granite benchtops.

Meal preparations are easy with the expanse of bench space, the wide five-burner gas hob, and underbench electric oven.

French doors next to the kitchen open out to a covered deck, allowing sheltered entertaining out here.

The deck wraps around the living and lounge areas to link to the low-maintenance grounds behind the house - a manicured presentation of clipped hedging and shrubs framing a rectangle of smooth lawn.

‘‘It’s easy-care and great family space,’’ say Ben and Vicky.

A spa sits at the end of the deck to provide a relaxing soak while appreciating the garden detail.

Upstairs, there are three double bedrooms and the family bathroom.

The master bedroom is a spacious parental retreat, with the expected ensuite and walk-in wardrobe, and also a set of French doors opening out to a private balcony and a view out over the established neighbourhood.

The balcony is one of Ben and Vicky’s favourite places in this home. Bayleys consultants Alison Smith and Karla Kimi are marketing the property, which they say is both eye-catching and practical.

The space and presentation here is going to appeal to many buyers, they suggest, who will also appreciate the newly laid carpet in bedrooms and lounge, and the laminated glass in the window joinery that helps to minimise the effects of UV light and noise.
