Classic tasty burgers crafted with Kiwi care

-

Burgers shouldn’t be disappointing. And they certainly shouldn’t taste like meatloaf.

It was their own disappointment when ordering burgers that spurred Dave and Keren Kurth to create Serial Griller, a popular burger restaurant in the beachside village of Ō akura.

‘‘All we really wanted was a classic American-style cheeseburger, but all too often we were served up burgers that failed to impress. Too much bread, dried out patties, patties that tasted like meatloaf…’’

It was all a bit bland for Dave and Keren, ‘‘So we started playing around with recipes at home and doing a little research. Before long we had a pretty amazing burger happening and we needed to share these with others,’’ Keren says.

‘‘We made them for friends and family and they agreed, these burgers were good, really good! And we were having fun. We realised we could be doing this for a living. And so the dream began.’’ The restaurant, which started out in the Coromandel, is now renowned for its primarily American-style smash burgers, Southern fried chicken burgers, popcorn chicken, buffalo wings and fries.

Based in popular Ō akura landmark The Carriage, which features a large sunny lawn with picnic tables and umbrellas, table tennis, corn hole, climb-aboard toy train and of course beautiful Ō akura Beach, it’s an exciting destination dining spot for young and old.

At Serial Griller, it’s all about what goes into each burger. The team use whole cuts of New Zealand grass-fed beef, which are ground and formed into patties on site. Free-range chicken is brined for ultimate taste and texture.

And all signature sauces are made on site too.

Fridges are always stocked with a great selection of New Zealandmade

canned beverages, craft beers, ciders, wines and soft drinks.

‘‘We’re a family-owned business, with our 13 year old working for us now too, and the younger two are great taste testers!’’ says Dave.

‘‘We have a strong focus on sustainability, using compostable packaging, recycling as much as we can, and using free range, New Zealand made where possible.’’

Always eager to give back to the community, the family sponsors kids’ soccer and rugby teams.
