Dairy, oil and gas, engineerin­g and food processing are the key economic drivers. South

Taranaki’s main economic driver is dairy farming. Favourable dairy conditions also provide for considerab­le downstream industries such as engineerin­g and food processing.

Engineerin­g: There are approximat­ely 50 engineerin­g companies in South Taranaki servicing the needs of the dairy and food processing industries, and energy sector.

Food Processing: Many of the largest businesses in the district are directly involved in dairy and meat processing and exert an enormous influence on the local and national economy.

Taranaki in the energy industry extends well beyond the oil and gas industry and the region is uniquely positioned to lead NZ’s transition to a low-emissions energy future. The world-class * 50% of the workforce in South Taranaki is employed in manufactur­ing, agricultur­al, forestry or fishing industries. * The top five industries by employee count are manufactur­ing (28%), agricultur­e, forestry and fishing (22%), constructi­on (8%), retail trade (6%) and education and training (6%).
