Pouakai Zoo offers fun and learning

-

Pouakai Zoo has been a destination for Taranaki families for almost 50 years; a place where children of the past now bring their own children and grandchildren.

The zoo is home to lions, donkeys, capuchin monkeys, meerkats, emus, goats, alpacas, lizards, guinea pigs, turtles, ostriches, gibbons, peacocks, chinchillas, cockatoos and tropical fish.

They all have their own personalities, including the majestic lions, the bosses of the animal kingdom. Hear the gibbons serenading to see which one has the higher-pitched voice; make friends with the well-behaved donkeys; laugh at the cheeky ostrich who loves trying to snatch the animal food when you are not looking.

Attractions include farm animal petting and feeding; live animal encounters; birthday parties; and the junior zookeeper programme where children have fun while they learn. They feed many of the animals, including the farm animals, monkeys, reptiles, possums and meerkats; brush the donkeys; and watch lion feeding.

And now you can also enjoy an overnight stay in the intimate tiny home retreat in a private bush environment, suitable for couples and those with one child. Immerse yourself in nature’s enchanting sounds, including distant lion roars. Experience the magic of approaching lions at dusk, illuminated by the shine of glow worms. Feed the lions, an unforgettable adventure, and the playful monkeys.

Pouakai Zoo was founded in 1976 as a wildlife reserve and was turned into a zoo in 1987 by its first owners. Current owners

XinCai Liu and Adam Can Horne took over in February 2014.

The zoo aims to create great memories for its visitors, while striving to ensure the well-being of the animals in its care.

Its owners work with other zoos and the community to provide a balance between

visitor interaction and sustainability. It also welcomes volunteers.
