Kart Club December 4, 2002 It was five out of five for the Tokoroa Kart Club at the New Zealand National Dirt Championships in Rotorua recently with all five competitors coming home with a top four placing in the unique national event.

President Shon Meszaros said the results proved Tokoroa drivers are tops at dirt racing.

‘‘Our drivers gave it 100 per cent and the results speak for themselves.’’

Tokoroa Kart Club’s Gregory Ilton (15) took out the national junior title, Brian won the senior 180kg Rotax and Bradley Tyrrell ( 15) was second in the senior 160kg Rotax.

In the cadet class Matthew Meszaros (9), following in his brother’s footsteps, obtained his first second in a big event and brother David ( 11) placed fourth in the junior restricted, his first national meet since he moved up from the cadets.

This event is very different to the racing normally carried out during the year because it is run on the dirt speedway track as opposed to the usual sealed tracks.

Norman Brooker also set a new mark in the under-10 boys 1/3 yards freestyle record.

The winner of the club trophy for hardest trier was Debra Beets, while coaches trophy went to Cheryl McGregor.

Both were rewarded for a season of enthusiasm and dedication.

The silver and bronze medal winners for senior boys were Graham Maxted ( silver) and Garth Taylor (bronze).

Both are members of the South Waikato Special Olympic team. 50 years ago Tokoroa may house only New Zea- land carving January 18, 1962 Checks are currently being run against stone taken from the archeological digging on the property of Messrs L J Davey and B E Palmer, Tokoroa, in an effort to find whether one area contains a monolithic carving.

Mr Davey said if this were so it would be the only set of its type in New Zealand.

He had heard little of the results as yet, ‘‘I don’t anticipate hearing anything much until the Auckland University team comes down,’’ he said.

Some carbon dating was to be done at Lower Hutt, but there was a large waiting list so that it could be some time before these tests were carried out.
