Celebration planned for Tokoroa

-

They have a passion for Tokoroa and two Tokoroa residents want to create a day dedicated to their home town.

Noel Ferguson and Missy Lepaio are putting the wheels in motion to create Tok Day and want your input.

Mr Fergusson said they were looking at having the day of celebration next year on August 8, starting at 6pm.

‘‘The numbers are significant to those from Tokoroa, it’s our telephone number prefix, 886, eighth of the eighth starting at 6pm,’’ Mr Ferguson says. ‘‘ We are facilitating a meeting to gauge whether the community is interested in participating.’’

The idea stemmed from a conversation on the Genuine Tokoroa Facebook page which has more than 7000 users who grew up in Tokoroa.

‘‘This is aimed at everybody, of all ages, from all over the world who have a common interest in Tokoroa. It’s about the power of people, it’s about engagement.’’

The organisers plan to have a live video stream during the performances so those from Tokoroa who live all over the world can participate.

‘‘ It would be awesome to showcase local talent on a world stage,’’ Ms Lepaio said, ‘‘and also get those outside of the country to perform as well which we will be able to see on a huge screen here.’’

A meeting will be held on September 5, at Papa o te Aroha Marae, starting at 6.30pm.
