You go girls, it’s your day to shine

- By PETRICE TARRANT

All things girls will be celebrated at South Waikato’s inaugural Girls Day Out this month.

A group of motivated Tokoroa women have formed a committee that is organising the event planned for March 21 at the South Waikato Sports and Events Centre.

Event organiser Angela Farrar said it is about providing a link between the women of the district and the services that are available within it.

‘‘There are so many things in the South Waikato that people can or do need or want that they don’t know about it.’’

She said they have 14 sites available, most which have already been booked out.

It will be just as much about raising awareness as it will be selling, she said.

From pyjamas, invitations and soaps to nails, cup cakes and beauty therapy, there will be something for all women, she said.

The committee is also in the process of arranging a stall that will sell unwanted ball dresses from people in the district.

‘‘It’s not just about beauty, it’s about girls.

‘‘It’s an opportunity to support local talent but also find out about something new.’’

The not- for- profit venture could become an annual event if it gains the traction it deserves this year, Farrar said.

‘‘I reckon we could fill the events centre but you have to start somewhere.’’

Committee member Sharon Livingston, who runs her own graphic design business, said there are so many women in the district who do not appreciate the value of their skills.

She said the aim was to eventually provide a mentoring service for such people.

The plan is to also highlight the different volunteer groups that are so strongly supported by the women of the district, she said.

The event is free entry and will run from 10am-2pm.
