Many expected to enter run/walk

- By ILONA HANNE

About 700 people are expected to participate in this year’s Stratford Nexan’s Mackays Pharmacy Fun Run / Walk, says Albie Jane of the Stratford Runners and Walkers Club.

He isn’t surprised the event is so popular — it has been going for 36 years and has always been well attended.

“The course has three distances making it suitable for all levels of fitness. From 3km, 5km or 10km the measured course goes through the spectacular Rhododendron Dell and along the streets of Stratford.” It’s a tried and tested route he says, and the club often receives positive feedback about it.

The event starts and finishes at the Stratford War Memorial Centre, travelling along Portia Street, Pembroke Road, Brecon or Hunt Road (depending on the course being run) then Glanville Road and Regan Street.

Albie says this event, run by the Stratford Runners and Walkers Club, is the second of eight in the series.

“And the more you enter to run or walk, the more chances you have at winning one of the major spot prizes at the end of the series. The biggest prize on offer is a $1000 travel voucher which is certainly worth winning.”

The final event takes place in Eltham, which is when the major prize draw is held.

Every event includes the opportunity to win spot prizes, and Albie says the Stratford Runners and Walkers Club members are proud of the quality of the prizes they put up in the Stratford event.

“They’re certainly the best prizes of the series, nothing under $20 for example, and we have three $100 notes to be won on the day, as well as a watch from Butchers Gemstones Jewellers.”

“We try to get most of our spot prizes in Stratford to support the local businesses.”

School-aged competitors have an extra draw card, with the chance for one school-aged participant to win $50 for themselves and $200 for their school.”

The major sponsor is Unichem Mackay’s Pharmacy and Albie says the group is grateful for the support.

“Several other local retailers have also supplied spot prizes and we are grateful to each and every one of them.”

It’s not just prizes to be won on the day. For the more serious participants there is also the chance to compete for a trophy, with two up for grabs — one for the first female 10km participant to cross the finish line, and one for the first male 10km participant.

Entry forms are available at Unichem Mackay’s Pharmacy on Broadway and Subway in Stratford, and people can enter on the day of the event up until 9.30am.
