Students recognised for the year
Stratford High School’s senior prizegiving took place on Friday, November 2.
The guest speaker was Kate Whareaitu, a former student who is now director of community services and deputy CEO at Stratford District Council. Principal Philip Keenan says the students all deserve congratulations for their efforts.
“We acknowledge the people who helped make success a reality for all the prizewinners, both at this afternoon’s ceremony and those we have acknowledged throughout the year. Behind every prize and every success are the teachers, parents, wha¯ nau, friends and supporters who have been with them every step of the way.”
Senior students were recognised across academic, sporting and cultural.
Year 13 student Katie Jones was named as the 2018 recipient of the school’s Roodbeen Trophy, for the best all-round senior student who shows dedication and commitment to the general life of the school.
As principal Philip Keenan presented the award, deputy principal Wayne Smith read the citation which said Katie has been involved in a wide and varied range of activities.
“It would take less time to list the things that she has not been involved in. She has not always been the leader of these activities, but you can guarantee that she was involved in some way.”
Katie has been a peer supporter and mediator, involved with Relay for Life and in a wide range of school activities and events including the student ball, student council and speech competitions. Katie was also responsible for creating a promotional video for the school.
A keen sportswoman, Katie has played basketball, netball and other sports, representing her house and school in competitions and events locally and further afield.
