- — Ilona Hanne

A powerful 5.8-magnitude earthquake was felt by more than 37,000 people across the length of New Zealand, sending many ducking for cover as the “long and rolling” tremors lasted 30 seconds. The quake struck 30km northwest of Levin at a depth of 37km at 7.53am on Monday and was felt by many in the Stratford district. In response to a Facebook post by the Stratford Press asking if anyone felt it, more than 50 people reported they had, with descriptions ranging from water sloshing out of fish tanks to windows rattling and whole houses shaking. By 11am, more than 37,000 people had registered feeling the shake on the Geonet website, with over 3000 describing it as ‘severe’. A number of aftershocks have occurred, with all being categorised as “weak” earthquakes on the GeoNet website.
