Holiday fun and games draw kids to the lawn

- Alyssa Smith

Children took part in a range of classic Kiwi summer lawn games at Stratford’s TSB Pool Complex.

Last week’s games were part of the Stratford District Council school holiday programme.

Aquatic services team leader Holly Baker says games such as Jenga, Connect Four, and musical chairs were set up for the children.

“The idea is to get the kids out and visit our great community places these school holidays. The cost of the activity was the standard pool entry fee so once they had finished playing the games in the sun, they could cool off with a nice swim.”

The games, targeted at all age groups, used the complex’s outdoor lawn space.

“It’s making use of the area so the public is aware it’s available for public use.”

Holly says the games were easy to do and people could work in groups or individuals.

“The games, such as egg and spoon races, wheelbarrow races and other Kiwi classics were chosen as they appeal to every kid, whether they want to work together or alone.

The lawn games were facilitated

by birthday and swim instructors Kaila Van In and Ella Coulton. Holly says it’s important for families to get to know pool staff. “Activities like this help families get familiar with the instructors and birthday party hosts, which can lead to more bookings, and also children creating

good relationships with pool staff.”

She says since the last Covid lockdown, fewer people have used the pool.

“Since we’ve been running activities like this, it’s increased our patronage and also encourages children to have a swim and further

develop their aquatic skills. The main goal is to get children into the facility and return to a sense of normality.”

The next school holiday programme hosted by the TSB Pool Complex is the Friday Rave. Bookings are essential and Holly encourages people to get in quick.

“The activity starts at 6pm. It’s going to be a very fun time for tamariki.”
