This week the Stratford Avon Bowling Club members fired their first shots of the new season on the outdoor greens of Ha¯wera Park and the Stratford Avon Bowlin Club.

The team of Duncan Matthews, Dennis McEwen, and Irwin Van Pelt came second at the Ha¯wera Park Thursday Optional Triples.

On Saturday the team of Duncan Matthews, Iain Parker, and Chris Hall came first at the Andersons Pies sponsored Mufti Optional Triples tournament, with the team of Mike Sherning, Dennis McEwen, and Irwin Van Pelt coming third.

On Sunday the Mixed Drawn Pairs Club Championsh­ip was played on a sunny day but with the novelty of scrim being put down to protect the green surface.

Oldest member Noeline Gavin had the honour of rolling the first bowl of the season aimed at frozen chicken in the middle of the green for the traditiona­l one foot in the ditch closest to the chook competitio­n, won by Cliff Smith.

There were two teams ending up on four out of four wins with Brian Needham and Toni Watson coming second with Lindsay Franklin and Theresa Needham becoming the first club champions of the 2022/23 season.
