Queen remembered at September meeting

- Carolyn Nicholas

Kaponga Women’s Institute members started their September meeting with a moment’s silence for Queen Elizabeth II.

Each member shared their personal memory of the Queen. Many had been at one of her visits to New Zealand and remembered it well.

A donation was agreed to go to Hospice and names were taken for International Day in November. Next month the WI celebrates its birthday and plans were finalised.

Another lot of knitting was collected for SANDS who dress sleeping babies for their families to then grieve with their baby.

The monthly raffle was won by Joy Eliason. Dorothy Hughes won a raffle at the National Camellia Society so was presented with the Silver Dish.

The silver dish is presented to a member who does something notable. President Jo Ellis has had the Silver Dish for a month.

After lunch, the members tried a British traditional steamed pudding, the spotted dick. It was delicious and fitting as it is an old British steamed pudding so members felt they were honouring the Queen who likely had it on her menu at some time.
