Landscaping: Good things take time!

- with Tim Goom

The temperatures are rising and turning your mind to outdoor living over the summer. The good news is you’re inspired and focussed on how you see your time spent with family and friends over the summer months.

The ‘less good’ news is that everyone you know is struck by the same inspiration as temperatures start to climb. What does this mean? Having the outdoor space you want to enjoy over the warmer months requires forethought and planning. Getting the ball rolling for your landscaping to reach fruition by summer needs action in winter.

As the impact of COVID on international travel continues to take its toll, our focus remains shifted to the joys of outdoor living in our backyard. Funds earmarked for overseas holidays are still being diverted to ensuring that our outdoor spaces are the best they can be to make for better family living in the event of further restrictions or lockdowns.

As one of Canterbury’s most renowned landscape architecture firms, Goom Landscapes is very aware of the challenges from both sides of the equation. The homeowner becomes understandably frustrated at knowing exactly what they want but being constrained by supply issues. From our perspective, we are being inundated with projects and trying to manage the supply issues wrought by COVID for materials. The warmer months and the prospect of the festive season spur on inspiration of homeowners, so the busiest time for landscapers is between September and Christmas. The reality is that COVID has impacted not just the supply of services nationally, but also the supply of materials - many of which are sourced internationally. This means if you have a particular vision of how you want your landscape project to evolve, you will need to be both organised and patient.

Understanding the process to bring your landscaping inspiration to fruition in the current climate is vital to managing the expectations of both parties. At Goom Landscapes, we have a process which sees your project through from design to completion. Once you make contact, we endeavour to come and see you on site within two weeks to see how we can assist. If you wish to proceed after the initial meeting, we then arrange a meeting with the best designer from our team for your project. Depending on the complexity, the design process can take anywhere from 2 weeks to 2 months. We are communicating with you throughout to ensure we are accurately capturing your vision. Following completion of design, we estimate the costings for constructing the design of your project. Again, we communicate with you regularly throughout this step. Once you are happy with the design and the budget, your project moves to the construction phase, overseen by our highly skilled project management team. Time frames are determined by a number of factors, including the capacity of the team and the supply issues for materials and labour of any suppliers involved in the project.

At Goom Landscapes, we are passionate about delivering our services and completing your project on time, to budget and to the Goom standard. In the current climate, this requires a high degree of organisation and communication from both parties- so don’t wait to get inspired by the sunshine! Plan ahead. Think of winter as the best time to really focus on how you want your outdoor living for the following summer to transpire. The Landscaping industry is currently in extremely high demand, but don’t be discouraged- plan ahead with the confidence that exceptional landscape design and construction is worth the wait and will significantly enhance the value of your property.
