Tom Ford 002

Tom Ford and Bridget Foley (Rizzoli International, $184)

If you’re looking to nail a gift for a fashion lover, look no further. The American designer’s 444-page coffee-table book is a visual homage to the glamour and sensuality of his luxury Tom Ford brand. Covering cosmetics, eyewear, women’s and men’s lines, commentary will go back as far as 2006, when Tom started his own label. This is the follow-up to his debut memoir (2004).

Who Lived There? The Stories Behind Historic New Zealand Buildings

Nicola McCloy and Jane King (Random House, $45)

If you’re typically curious about the stories behind something, Jane King’s photographs and Nicola McCloy’s words may scratch that itch. They present the lost tales behind unusual buildings around New Zealand – from romantic churches to small-town taverns, artefacts of abandoned industry to evidence of early New Zealanders’ fortitude. Find out about places like Langlois-Eteveneaux House in Akaroa; Donovans Store in Ōkārito; and the Empire Hotel in Dunedin.

Wild Place

Christian White (Affirm Press, $34.99)

When a teenage girl goes missing from a suburb in Australia, rumours swirl and schoolteacher Tom becomes convinced he holds the key. Compelled to take action, with the help of some locals Tom exposes a darkness lurking underneath their suburban lifestyle – reeking of guilt, desperation and violence. Christian White is known for his white-knuckle rides (he co-created Netflix series Clickbait and The Nowhere Child was one of Australia’s best-selling debut novels ever).

The Fell

Sarah Moss (Pan Macmillan, $34.99)

This suspenseful novel takes place during a two-week quarantine period, when the main character gets fed up and goes for a walk. Sound familiar? Kate heads for the moor, thinking no one will know. But her neighbour sees her leaving and her son realises she’s missing. Having injured herself, Kate’s situation becomes a mountain rescue operation. The Fell asks questions about the place the world has become since March 2020 and what we must do to survive.
