Pacific Music nominations big ‘buzz’ for Adeaze

- BY NICOLA RUSSELL

CHART-TOPPING brothers Feagaigafou (Nainz) and Logovii (Viiz) Tupai – aka Adeaze – are back in the groove for next week’s Pacific Music Awards.

The duo have four nominations for the star-studded celebration of Pacific artists and their sounds.

‘‘To have a night where we can celebrate Pacific Islanders’ and Maori musical heritage is something we are proud of. We are proud to release music and hear what everyone else is doing too,’’ Viiz told Sunday News.

He says it’s a ‘‘buzz’’ to be nominated four times for the event, on Thursday at Manukau’s Telstraclear Pacific Events Centre.

Adeaze’s self-released 2011 album Rise And Shine is up for Best Pacific Music Album and the brothers will also contest Best Pacific Urban Artist and Best Pacific Group. Their single Paradise is also nominated for Best Pacific Song.

It has been a big month for the Tupai brothers, with New Zealand music month gigs and a trip to American Samoa where 8000 people turned out to their show.

Of Samoan descent, Nainz and Viiz’s musical talents were nurtured by their family. From four and five years old, they played music in their church, and sang in front of small audiences.

The brothers have worked to keep Samoan representation in their music.

‘‘The first songs we were brought up playing were Samoan songs, so definitely Island grooves are in our style,’’ Viiz said.

They have also dedicated a song on both their studio albums to Samoa.

Another with four nominations on Thursday is hip-hop heavyweight David Dallas. Dallas, who splits his time between New York and New Zealand, is nominated in Best Pacific Male Artist for his 2011 album The Rose Tint. The album also earns Dallas nominations for Best Pacific Urban Artist, Best Pacific Song for Take A Picture and Best Pacific Music Album.

Kas Futialo – aka Tha Feelstyle – nominated in three categories, joins Dallas and Adeaze in the battle for Best Pacific Music Album with his 2011 release Good Morning Samoa.
