It’s cash for ‘Flash’ at Sharks

- BY ADRIAN PORSZENKO

PENRITH star Michael Gordon has spoken for the first time about his decision to sign with Cronulla, revealing he had to abandon his dreams of becoming a one-club man in order to look after his family.

It was revealed last month the Sharks had made Gordon their recruitment priority and the premiership surprise packets have got their man. The 28-year-old could even be released to the Sutherland Shire immediately if the clubs can come to terms.

After knocking back a more lucrative Sharks offer the last time he was off contract – Panthers supremo Phil Gould recently conceded Gordon was ‘‘underpaid’’ for a large portion of his career – the NSW winger couldn’t afford to again take unders to remain at Penrith.

‘‘When I thought about loyalty, last time I stayed loyal and took less than what I could have got,’’ Gordon said.

‘‘While the club has been good to me for the last two years I’ve been injured, I just felt it was best to move on. It was very tough. Everyone has dreams of being a one-club player and I’m no different.

‘‘But times change and football is so much of a business these days. It was in my best interests to move on.’’

Gordon has been sidelined since breaking his leg in the opening round, the second serious injury he suffered in as many years. The utility back will see his surgeon tomorrow to remove the screw and could be back by the end of June.

Whether he has played his last game for the Panthers is uncertain. ‘‘Once I signed with Cronulla I was happy it was done, but all I’ve been worrying about is getting back on the field.’’

Penrith coach Ivan Cleary overlooked Gordon for the fullback role in favour of Lachlan Coote, although it’s yet to be determined which position he’ll play for the Sharks.

‘‘Flash’’ hasn’t given up hope of again representing NSW.‘‘I haven’t had two years of bash and barge, and wear and tear of playing every week. The body feels great and hopefully I can play well for a number of years.’’
