Single bells in time for Christmas

- MIKE ALEXANDER

Rmike.alexander@fairfaxmedia.co.nz INTERNATIONALLY acclaimed, chart topping (and Obama approved) artist Gin Wigmore has debuted her new single Dirty Mercy.

Available on all digital platforms, the gritty new tune comes just in time for her highly anticipated Let It Ride tour which kicks off on November 19 in Mexico City. Wigmore and her band will then roll onto North America, with 11 headlining dates starting on November 23 in New Orleans, making stops in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee, among other states, and winding up in Albany, New York on December 9.

Dirty Mercy is a glimpse of what’s to come in 2017 from the young New Zealander who has also confirmed that an album is in the works and set for release early next year.

‘‘I made sure I came out swinging with this one.’’ Wigmore says. ‘‘I had always wanted to write a song with this sort of energy. A little trashy, kinda p...ed off, whilst still retaining my love for a solid melody. Dirty Mercy is a song that really represented where my head was at when I first began this venture into my next album.’’

Wigmore has been busy writing and recording in Nashville and Los Angeles and plans to reveal more music and details on her forthcoming release very soon.

Closer to home, Auckland folksters Albi & The Wolves have released One Eye Open from their forthcoming album, which is out on December 9.

‘‘When we finished this song we felt it had to be out before the album as the dynamic of the song kinda sums the band up.,’’ says front man Chris Dent, aka Albi. ‘‘The quick and slow elements represent some of our different styles and we dabble in a few different grooves that fans of ours might recognise.’’ One Eye Open was written for an ex-girlfriend. ‘‘She was awesome and loads of fun so we made One Eye Open exciting to perform and we hope people have as much fun hearing it’’.

Further south, Christchurch based singer/songwriter Bryony Matthews has released Voices from her forthcoming album Little Queen, due out early 2017. Matthews writes unique, considered, lyrics-focused folkpop offerings, with her band lending an upbeat ambience to the songs. ‘‘ Voices was written in 2015 at a very confused time in my life and, while the lyrics are full of angst and confusion, the instrumentation picks it up and turns it into an upbeat and danceable track,’’ she says.

Matthews enlisted Dictaphone Blues frontman Eddie Castelow to produce her forthcoming album, bringing AJ Park and Adam Hattaway along for the ride.
