Quake warning system too expensive for NZ

-

A system that could warn Kiwis an earthquake is on its way is considered too expensive ato be used in New Zealand.

The Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management said an Earthquake Early Warning system – which is used in quake-prone countries such as Mexico, Japan, and the United States – would not work until New Zealand has 24/7 monitoring available.

In September a massive 7.1-magnitude quake ripped through Mexico City toppling more than 40 buildings and killing 370 people, experts believe the death toll could have been far worse if it had not been for its warning system.

Director of MCDEM Sarah Stuart-Black said installing similar technology was not an immediate priority in NZ.
