Aussie drug mule to marry in ‘lavish’ jail ceremony
BOGOTA Jailed Australian drug mule Cassie Sainsbury will marry her fiance Scott Broadbridge in jail next year, in a ceremony that the couple’s celebrity agent says will be ‘‘lavish’’ and ‘‘great exposure’’.
Sainsbury, 22, is serving a sixyear sentence in Colombia’s El Buen Pastor prison for trying to smuggle 5.8 kilograms of cocaine out of Bogota airport, hidden in packages of headphones.
Broadbridge, who was not with Sainsbury in Colombia, was engaged to her when she was caught. He had maintained that he would stand by her ‘‘not matter how long it takes’’.
Sainsbury was recently granted permission to hold her nuptials behind bars, and the traditional ceremony is expected to take place in the middle of next year.
The couple’s celebrity agent, Max Markson, told Adelaide’s Advertiser that he expected it to be an intimate affair attended by family, jail wardens and friends she had made in the foreigners’ wing of the Bogota prison.
Sainsbury negotiated a plea deal in November and was fined and sentenced to six years, a surprisingly lenient sentence. She AP, FAIRFAX could be in for as little as three years if she displays good behaviour. She has reportedly been teaching English in prison.
The former sex worker changed her story several times after her arrest. Most recently, she told 60 Minutes that she thought she had accepted a job as a legitimate courier transporting documents for US$10,000 plus flights, but the plans changed at the last minute.
She said she was sent to Colombia, where a ‘‘mastermind’’ known only as Angelo threatened via WhatsApp to kill her mother, sister and fiance if she did not transport his drugs. However, she could not remember how to unlock her mobile phone to show the WhatsApp messages. Fairfax
