Fiji flick switch to
AUSTRALIA have failed to secure top spot in their New Zealand men’s rugby sevens pool, going down 26-15 to Fiji.
In a seesawing clash yesterday in Hamilton, the two sides traded tries until the Olympic gold medallists pulled away in the second half with a long-range Jasa Veremalua five-pointer and an Eroni Sau clincher.
Fiji had to defend for long periods but once they flicked the switch on attack the Australians found them hard to handle.
They’ll go on to face Pacific neighbours Samoa in today’s quarterfinals, while Australian will take on Kenya.
A semifinal against the fearsome South Africans could follow.
England were thumped 28-7 in their final pool clash, failing to come to grips with the South Africans’ pace and power.
South Africa finished first in Pool B and England second – forcing them to face the Pool C winners.
First up yesterday, Australia made a winning start, downing a valiant Spanish side 21-5.
Fresh off last week’s triumph in Sydney, the Australians took a little while to warm up in their first Hamilton Sevens outing and led by just two points at halftime.
But second-half efforts to Tom Connor and an in-form Lachie Anderson earned the Aussies a win before tougher challenges against Wales and Fiji. - AAP
